Newborn Photography Tips

Newborn Photography

As a new parent, you want to capture beautiful pictures of your little one (or ones) as often as possible. The newborn stage doesn’t exist for long. The best time to plan a baby photoshoot is during the 7-14 day mark. So, if you want newborn pics captured professionally, you have to make an appointment with professional photographs at this time. As babies spend most of their time sleeping, you can have amazing pictures and memories to last long.

It’s better to take help from the photographers rather than doing it by yourself. You will feel exhausted adjusting to parenthood and need one less thing to worry about. So, if you are preparing to have a professional photo shoot of your little one, here are some tips to help you:

Use natural light

Natural light is the best way to capture the tiny details and beautiful expressions of your baby. Most newborn photoshoots are done at home, so make use of the natural light that will enter your home. Or you can also prepare your balcony or backyard for the photoshoot. The light from the morning or evening sunshine is best for the camera to capture beautiful backgrounds.

Gather some props

Babies look beyond cute in props. You don’t need expensive props for the photoshoot. Cosy blankets, quilts, and caps are enough for the baby to stand out amazingly in pictures. You can also use stuffed toys, swaddles, etc. for the photoshoot.

Props are like the finishing touch for the already beautiful babies. Moreover, you don’t need to buy new ones. You can also make use of the items available at your home like toys and blankets.

Proper composition

What you’re including in the picture frames makes a lot of difference between professional and amateur photography. The things you are including and the placement of objects relative to the baby determine the beauty of the picture. Called composition, you should take care of the negative space and leading lines while clicking baby pictures. Finding the right composition lets viewers engage with the pictures and your babies look spectacular in the frame.

Make sure baby is well-fed and rested

You don’t want your baby to be fussy and crying during the photoshoot. To avoid this, make sure the baby is well-fed and rested. As a new parent, you will know the times when the baby sleeps more and when the baby is active. You can plan the photoshoot during that interval. Also, make sure the timing is appropriate to the natural light coming into the house. You don’t want to click pictures at noon when the light is too bright though the baby is active and well-fed.

Use muted colours in the background or props

Instead of bright and flashy colours like red, orange, and yellow, muted colours like white, nude, cream, etc. are the best colours for the background. Muted colours enhance the picture and give the best image of your baby.

Even while selecting the props, choose light and muted colours. They look great on your baby, especially when it complements the background colour. For instance, light purple props on a white background make your baby stand out in a great way.

Hire a professional photographer

To save all the trouble of readying your child, adjusting the light, and taking hundreds of snaps on your phone, you can think of hiring a professional photographer. They make the work easy for you by planning and prepping for the photoshoot. They also have techniques on how to handle the baby during the session. All you need is to just sit back and relax while they take amazing pictures of your baby.

No matter how much you plan, your baby might become fussy during the session. Keep things like the pacifier, a bottle of milk, a swaddle blanket, white noise, etc. Keep the environment calm and less noisy. Make sure to have no guests coming at the time and keep the noise as minimal as possible. And remember to be patient and alert to react to the baby’s cues like hunger and sleep.
