Recovering from Wisdom Teeth Removal

A wisdom tooth is the last tooth in our mouth. The main issue with this tooth is that it cannot be cleaned and maintained like every other tooth. Hence, there are more chances of the cavity, which may lead to root canal treatment. The dentist advises that wisdom tooth removal is the wise option to avoid future problems.

It takes about two weeks to recover post-removal. Some wisdom teeth do not fully emerge and become lodged (or impacted) on neighbouring teeth or bone. This frequently results in a gum flap covering your teeth. Others become very long (over-erupt). Various steps need to be taken care of as it does not harm your teeth in the future, and your mouth stays healthy.

Even after its removal, you must take its utmost care. Here, we’ve laid down five tips for wisdom teeth removal recovery.

  1. Use Ice To Reduce Pain

    Icing the jaw and cheek is a common wisdom tooth removal pain treatment strategy. This also aids in the reduction of bruising and swelling that may occur as a result of your procedure. The doctor recommends this pain reduction method in any procedure where extraction and swelling is concerned.

    For 15 to 20 minutes, apply an ice pack to the side of the extraction site. After that, after 20 minutes, remove the ice pack and rest your face for 20 minutes before icing it again. For the first 36 to 48 hours after your treatment, do this as much as feasible.

  2. Use Antiseptic Mouth Rinse To Prevent Infections

    You are brushing your teeth the night before your dentist may permit surgery. When brushing the area closest to the extraction site, however, be gentle. This will aid in the prevention of the blood clot becoming dislodged.

    The day following surgery, you may rinse your mouth. Instead of using commercial rinses, which can be overly powerful, use warm salt water. Do this at least five times each day, preferably right after each meal.

  3. Follow Your Dentist’s Prescriptions

    Ibuprofen, such as Advil, may be sufficient for wisdom tooth removal pain alleviation, depending on your pain tolerance. If not, make sure to take the stronger pain relievers that your dentist has prescribed.

    Antibiotics may be required to combat and prevent illnesses. Even if the edema has subsided, you should finish the entire prescription. If you stop taking antibiotics too soon, the germs in your mouth may become resistant to them.

  4. Don't Eat Hard Foods And Hot Drinks

    You should avoid hot foods and beverages for the first three hours after the surgery, or at least until the anesthetic effects have worn off. It will take some time for the tooth sockets to recover correctly. You'll need to allow the stitches time to sink in as well. Stick to a light diet and water for the first few weeks.

    It's best to avoid eating food near the back of your mouth, where the stitches are. You don't want to cause any unwanted disruption to the blood clot at the extracted tooth's location. It may take several months before you return to a regular diet, which will only be possible once all of the stitches have been removed and there are no symptoms of swelling left.

  5. Get Rest And Raise The Head To Make Sleeping More Comfortable

    When you sleep for the first several days after the treatment, attempt to keep your head up, you can elevate your upper body as near to a 45-degree angle as feasible by using pillows. The goal is to find a comfortable position while lifting your head and shoulders above the level of your heart, whether you sit in a recliner or rest your upper body on layers of cushions.

    Wisdom teeth removal recovery could take anywhere from a few days to a week. You should take it easy for the first few days, but you should be able to return to work, school or everyday activities after that. Avoid anything that can cause interruptions to your mouth during the recovery period as much as possible.
