Funding for Mobility Scooters

Foldable Mobility Scooter

Wheelchairs and mobility scooters can help those with disabilities navigate their communities and regain some of their independence. That being said, such devices in Australia can be expensive. Fortunately, there are several government programs like NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) that extend a helping hand. These organisations work to enhance the lives of the disabled by allowing them to become independent and participate in a community.

However, such government programs only allow eligible people to access financial support. If you fulfil the eligibility criteria, then you’ll need to undergo the application process.

To help you through the process, here is a complete guide on mobility scooter funding.

What are the eligibility criteria?

One of the questions you’re probably asking is: will NDIS or other organisations fund my foldable mobility scooter? The first thing you should learn is the eligibility criteria.

You are eligible if:

  • You live in Australia, are an Australian citizen, a Permanent Visa holder or a Protected Special Category Visa holder.
  • You're aged between 7 and 65. If your age is beyond 65 or you’ve got a disabled child below 7, then you can access other forms of support.
  • Need support from another person because of your long-term or crucial disability
  • You need a special device to move
People who do not fulfil any of the above NDIS criteria can apply for other related support or programs.

What is the application process with NDIS?

The application process varies from situation to situation. It would be different if you’re not receiving any government support currently.

Situation 1. You’re not receiving government support

If you’re currently not receiving any government support, you can apply by either:
  • Calling them on 1800 800 110 and appeal to make an Access Request,
  • Filling in and submitting the Access Request form via email to NAT@ndis.gov.au or
  • Contacting your local LAC (Local Area Coordinator) and NDIA office via a call on 1800 800 110, asking them to make an Access-Request.

While making an Access Request, you will be asked to do the following things:
  • Go through an inquiry regarding your age, residence and citizenship/residency status to make sure you meet the NDIS requirements.
  • Provide a final confirmation to enter NDIS.

Moreover, you also need to provide proof of your disability that confirms your impairment. It could be a general practitioner’s certificate.

Situation 2. You already receive government support and want to switch to NDIS

NDIA will receive your contact details from your state or territory government. Afterwards, one of its representatives will give you a call to begin your application process for NDIS.

The process may involve:
  • Confirmation of your identity.
  • Obtainment of your consent or the consent of someone who is legally representing you to become an NDIS member.
  • Confirmation of your personal information, which includes your name, age, the place you reside and whether or not you’re a permanent citizen of Australia.
  • Obtainment of your consent for the information to be confirmed through your Centrelink record.
  • Getting your permission to contact your health professional, school or service provider to help confirm your eligibility.

Situation 3. Disabled children

If your child is disabled and you’re not getting support for your child, then you can call NDIA on 1800 800 110. But if your child is currently supported by other disability programs and you desire to switch to NDIS when it’s available in your area, then they will contact you.

The Early Childhood Partner will discuss your child’s support needs on behalf of the NDIS. They will take information like:

  • Your child’s overall health (i.e. whether or not your child plays, gets along with others, tells you about their needs, etc.)
  • Doctor’s or therapist’s report on your child’s health.
  • Early childhood assessment tools.
  • Your child’s areas of interest and the areas where they need more help.

After collecting this information, NDIS along with the Early Childhood Partner will work out your child’s needs. Accordingly, they will inform you about the next steps.

Home care packages

If you are currently taking the benefits of home care packages, then you might be able to get government aid.

  • If you’re using of home care package 1 and 2, then you’re eligible for the items available in the program
  • If you’re using of home care package 3 and 4, then you can only apply for:
    • Power wheelchairs long with their customisation
    • Scooters
    • Home modifications

Hopefully, the information above helped you understand how to get mobility scooter funding. After getting the support, always consider purchasing the best portable mobility scooter or wheelchair for yourself or your loved one.
