How to Create Your Own Home Cinema

A home cinema isn’t just about a big screen in front of a comfortable sofa. There are lots of other variables to consider too. Although with so many options available and things to consider, building your own home cinema can make your head spin, especially if you’re a novice. But don’t worry, we’re here to help. In this blog, we’ll tell you exactly how to create your own home cinema.

1. Dedicated cinema or a multifunctional room?

The first step is to decide whether you’re going to have a room that is specifically and only a home cinema or if you want it to be multifunctional. There are pros and cons for either option, it depends on your preferences and unique situation. It can help to think about the available space in your home and how you and your family use your home.

Once you know if you need to make your room multifunctional or not, you can get started assembling everything you need to create your own home cinema. For instance, if you have a spare room that serves no purpose, you’ve got a great space for a home cinema. This is especially true if you and your family enjoy watching movies regularly.

2. TV or projector?

Your home cinema will be built around this decision: will you get a TV or a projector? Some factors can affect this choice beyond preference though. For instance, TVs only go up to a certain size, while a projector can be just about limitless in terms of screen size. However, you want to avoid getting a screen that is too big. We’ll tell you more about this later.

Whatever you choose, make sure you can easily mount and operate it. Slimline TVs can easily be wall-mounted, while projectors can be hung from the ceiling for an uninterrupted image.

3. Match seating to screen size

While comfort should be an important factor in your seating, you also need to consider the layout and what’s appropriate to your screen and the room’s sizes. For instance, it can be detrimental to have a large screen in a small room. It can be difficult to see everything that’s happening without distortion. You may even experience negative health effects like muscle pains in your neck and headaches.

Your seats shouldn’t be overly close to the screen. You should be able to comfortably able to see all of the screens without having to look up or down.

If you’re going to have multiple rows of seats in your home cinema, make sure no one’s view is blocked. You can achieve this by using tiered seating so that each row sits slightly higher than the last, just like in a traditional cinema or theatre.

4. Choose quality speakers

Sound plays a vital role in any movie, so your speakers need to be up to the job. Choose a high-quality surround sound system and make sure they are laid out correctly. The standard layout is to have two speakers next to the screen, two speakers slightly behind the seats, and one directly behind the seat.

Once you have your speakers, ensure that your room is adequately soundproofed. Otherwise, your neighbours may complain if you like to watch loud movies late at night.

5. Keep cables tidy

With a host of electronics, your home cinema can quickly be overwhelmed with wires. This is why the next step is to get these cables under control. There are lots of strategies you can try, like bunching cables and running them behind walls and furniture or along the edge of the room. There are even professionals you can call to set up your home cinema neatly.

A tidy home cinema space will be one you’re proud of and more likely to use, making it a worthwhile investment.

6. Get control over all light

Home cinemas are spaces where you need to restrict natural light. Otherwise, it can be difficult to see the action on the screen, resulting in a lesser movie experience.

To deal with this, it’s ideal to choose a room that has few or no windows, like a basement. However, this isn’t always possible. But that doesn’t mean you can’t have a home cinema. All you need to do is install some quality block-out blinds to keep out natural light. Make sure no light creeps in around the edges and they won’t move in the breeze.
